Self-Defense Weapons for Women: How to Protect Yourself from Harm

When looking to protect yourself from harm, whether it’s physical or emotional, you may think that lethal self-defense weapons like guns and knives are the best options.

While they can certainly be helpful, they’re also serious weapons that shouldn’t be taken lightly—and they aren’t always necessary in situations where there isn’t an active threat to your safety.

There are also some disadvantages to using these self-defense weapons, mainly if you aren’t very comfortable with them and don’t know how to use them properly or safely. Instead, you can look at non-lethal ways to protect and carry.

Understanding self-defense as a technique to get away, deter, or alarm an attacker is just as effective. The goal is to give yourself enough time to not become the victim of an attack. Using self-defense weapons for women that support this also allows you to always remain empowered and prepared.

Pepper Spray

Pepper spray is one of the most popular self-defense weapons for women.

It is easy to use and can be very effective in deterring an attacker. But you should know a few things before you buy pepper spray.

  • Make sure that your pepper spray is legal in your state. Some states restrict the size or type of pepper spray that can be sold.
  • Familiarize yourself with how to use your pepper spray. Please read the instructions that come with it, and practice using it so that you feel comfortable using it in an emergency.
  • Keep your pepper spray within easy reach. Many women keep their pepper spray in their purses or on their keychains.

A stun gun is an excellent self-defense weapon for women.

It’s non-lethal, so you won’t have to worry about accidentally killing your attacker.

And it can disable an attacker long enough for you to get away. With this weapon, you must press the button and keep pushing until the attacker drops down or falls.

I recommend getting one with at least 20 milliamps to be more effective. If the attack has a knife, use pepper spray instead.

Knuckle Keychain

A knuckle keychain is a great way to keep your keys close at hand while also being able to defend yourself if needed.

If someone tries to attack you, you can use the keys as a weapon to jab at their eyes or face.

Plus, the weight of the keys can help add force behind your punches. Hold the keychain in your fist with the keys between your fingers, and you’re ready to go.

Self-defense Moves

There are a few simple self-defense moves that every woman should know to protect herself from harm.

One move is called the palm heel strike. To do this, you raise your hand and strike the attacker with the bottom of your palm, right below the thumb.

Another move is called the elbow strike, precisely what it sounds like—using your elbow to jab at an attacker.

The third move is the head butt, striking an attacker with the top of your head.

The final move, called the knee jab, involves using your knee to hit an assailant’s body or head.

These are just a few moves that every woman should know.

Focus on the points where your attacker is the most vulnerable and shift your weight to weaken their hold, allowing you to get away.

60 minute self defense

The best self-defense weapon is the one you have with you, even if it’s your own defense knowledge.

The most important thing is to be prepared and know what options are available to you.
